Randy Michaels, the CEO of The Tribune Company, a longtime and extremely successful broadcasters, was taken to task by legendary journalist and columnist Robert Feder.
Randy routed a list of "Words to be Avoided" for the use of WGN-AM Radio. I've seen this list before and we believe that Michael's is right-on.
McVay Media News Consultant, Holland Cooke, forwarded the list to me and suggested that we psot it on our web site.
The following is the list of FORBIDDEN NEWSSPEAK WORDS AND PHRASES. We agree ... come into the TODAY and leave print journalism the newspapers.
“The real goal here is to avoid using words that make you sound like you’re reading, instead of talking — that shatter the image you’re speaking knowledgeably to one person. By not using ‘newsspeak,’ you enhance your reputation as a communicator.” Said the accompanying memo from the WGN News Director.
The words to eliminate:

• “Laud” meaning “praise”
• “Seek” meaning “look for”
• “Some” meaning “about”
• “Two to one margin” . . . “Two to one” is a ratio, not a margin. A margin is measured in points. It’s not a ratio.
